Lessons for the Discerning Gentleman: Lesson # 5

By Mark Matthew

We are a grooming club for fine gentlemen and throughout 2008 we will present little (sometimes unknown) facts about how to be a gentleman. While we are working towards it, we don’t claim to be the authority on the topic. However, Mr. John Bridges literally wrote the book How To Be A Gentleman. For lesson #5 we quote Mr. Bridges’s from his book in regards to some real life scenarios:

- “A gentleman feels no necessity to wear socks after Memorial Day – at least in casual situations…”

- “If a gentleman is given to wearing outlandish hats – such as a deerstalker or a Russian sable cap with ear flaps – he understands that he will probably attract attention.”

- “Although a gentleman usually takes his shirts to a laundry, he also knows how to use an iron and a can of spray starch.”

- “A gentleman owns at least one pair of black lace-up shoes.”
